Some Pro’s and Con’s in Standard Form:
Pro’s
- Proven reliability. The DR-Z400-E is just one of those bikes that given a respectable level of tender loving care, just keeps churning through whatever you point it at. It’s an important ingredient when you are traveling days between next seeing civilisation.
- Point and Shoot. The strong delivery of well-placed power from low to mid-range with a level of torque that instills confidence, finds the DR-Z400-E with tractor like characteristics comfortably up most challenging inclines, often awaiting its rivals multi attempts.
- Electric Start.
- 398cc displacement, DOHC and liquid cooled.
- Showa rear oil damped coil spring shock with high and low speed compression adjustment.
- Showa 49mm fully adjustable front forks.
- 100% street legal and learner approved.
Con’s
- Approximately 138Kg wet weight in standard form makes the DR-Z400-E a heavy bike to manipulate if comparing to some of today’s single purpose machines.
- The suspension is said to be designed for a rider of approximately 73Kg. Subsequently for heavier set riders spring upgrades become desirable.
- An approximate 935mm Seat Height can make the DR-Z a tall mount in standard form, whilst handlebar height is too low for most off-road riders when in the standing position.
- A sixth gear would be much enjoyed by those using the DR-Z to commute or undertaking long fast stretches.
- Standard side stand inhibitor switch can be impractical off-road.
- Exhaust system reported by many owners to be impractically loud.
- Plenty of exposed engine casing for off-road obstacles to impact.
